Our corner table in the window of this recently refurbished elegant restaurant overlooked the stunning vista of Viking Bay. Just below us was the sunny garden terrace, where guests can enjoy the fresh sea air as they dine alfresco.

From an attractive à la carte menu, we selected the creamy goat's cheese served atop a bed of sweet Bramley apple purée with walnuts, salad and balsamic vinegar, and a dish of seared smoked salmon, with an aromatic fennel salad and slices of potato. Both were pleasingly fresh and light. My main course of succulent roasted rump of lamb, accompanied by a serving of Lancashire hotpot and smooth rosemary mashed potato was well crafted and thoroughly enjoyed. My dining companion's dish of herbencrusted cod with juicy clams on a bed of mashed potato with buttery wilted spinach and accompanied by a wonderfully creamy white wine sauce, was equally inspired and delicious. From the dessert menu, we shared the homemade strawberry Bakewell tart, served with lashings of fresh double cream - a very welcome treat for the both of us.

The Ballards coffee lounge, where we enjoyed our pre-dinner drinks, also offers a selection of daily specials including sandwiches, breakfasts, light bites and salads, together with an extensive children's menu and a varied selection of wines and real ales.
