The cuisine served at The Shurland Hotel Restaurant successfully walks the tightrope between modernist fusion food and traditional British fare. The menu is varied and offers great food, including a wide selection of vegetarian options, at very reasonable prices. A dynamic wine list, complete with detailed tasting notes, reflects the sophistication of the cleverly crafted menu.

My starter of grilled goat's cheese with beetroot and orange was a wonderfully savoury and earthy treat. Other starters included home-cured salmon with pickled cucumber and a Pommery mustard dressing, which perfectly complemented the richness of the fish. Both starters were wonderfully fresh, allowing the natural flavours of the ingredients to shine through. The main course of lamb rump was served with a velvety gravy and accompanied by steamed carrots, courgette and swede, with a serving of Dauphinoise potatoes, which offered a luxurious counterpart to the light vegetables. The mushroom stroganoff mille feuille was made with perfectly light and crisp pastry, and served with a chive mash - delightfully creamy, with a hint of tarragon to complement the mushroom. The dessert menu also offered an array of delights, including a selection of homemade ice creams and a fragrant Normandy apple flan accompanied by a portion of smooth creme anglaise.

Boasting a stylish yet cosy interior, with excellent food and knowledgeable staff, The Shurland really is a must-visit venue
