The Dining Room
To sincerely appreciate your meal, arrive hungry and banish diets. Start with a pot of double Gloucestershire cheese melted with best ale and grainy mustard, served with dipping soldiers. Then really celebrate this jewel of English cookery with steaming steak and kidney pudding or lamb and mint pie - two signature dishes that have, with very good reason, been on the menu for over 20 years. On this occasion I fell for the 'Fishy Dishy'; smoked haddock in wine topped with mustard cheese rarebit. My guest plumped for wild venison on creamy mash with redcurrant butter sauce and brandy-soaked grapes. Simply superb.
A meal here is not complete until you have indulged in dessert, be it scrumptious sticky toffee pudding with caramel crunch ice cream, lemon posset with black-pepper shortbread or spotted dick - we had all three. The Dining Room is impeccably run by a professional and passionate team, which makes the experience even more individual and distinctive.
