Set in a grand 1905 house, which has undergone a contemporary conversion but still belongs undoubtedly in one of the oldest villages in Britain, Claygate, The Swan Inn boasts the beauty of the Surrey Hills on one side and historic Hampton Court on the other. The outer aesthetics of the timely country manor reflect the feel of the atmosphere inside - this inn is homely in appearance and ambience. The staff have a relaxed nature, attending to your every need, and you'll be treated like a local the minute you step through the door. Upon walking into this mingling of bed and breakfast, restaurant and cosy pub, it is immediately comforting to see that the traditions of warm rural hospitality are being upheld.

The interior is spacious and traditionally decorated; to one side you have the bar area (where food can also be eaten) and to the other you have the restaurant. Customary pub dishes are available at very honest prices - bangers and mash, home-cooked steak and Guinnes pie and scampi are the immediate eye-catchers. Reinforcing the distinctive British feel is the roast dinner board offering three different meats, available every Sunday. If you're after something a little more exotic, visit on a Tuesday, Friday or Saturday evening and choose from a tempting selection of authentic Thai dishes, which are served alongside the usual British menu. A takeaway service is also offered if you fancy putting your feet up at home.

Gaze up at the high ceilings whilst eating and take in the magnificence of this building. Each window is draped with lovely deep-red curtains that hang just inside wall-mounted candles, and the scene is set for a relaxed dining experience. The whole family is catered for and, no matter what your tastes, there really is something for everyone. The sandwich menu will accommodate those in search of a snack, with fresh baguettes and a whole bunch of fillings providing good value for money. With a gastronomic focus and an unrivalled location, The Swan Inn is my number one choice for dining and relaxing in the beautiful Surrey countryside.
