After a hearty trek in the woods or a hard day out on the Sunningdale golf course, there's always the charm of The Brickmakers to retire to, any night of the week. Not that you need an excuse to visit this delightful restaurant; with a couple of guest ales, superb no-nonsense food and heart-warming puds, it'll warm your cockles, especially if you visit on an evening cold enough to warrant the log fires burning.

The setting is exquisite - an attractive red-brick building surrounded by greenery and a picturesque sun-dappled garden at the rear. Inside, the cosy bar and the light, elegant restaurant offer an array of places to while away some quality hours with your loved ones. With the help of the attentive staff, we chose a table and eased ourselves into comfy chairs with a view of the candlelit conservatory. We started with the chilli and garlic sautéed tiger prawns, and the deep-fried Somerset Brie and risotto cakes - unpretentiously fine fare which went down a treat, aided by a fabulously fruity Shiraz. For my main course, and with a feeling that the stresses of the day were falling away, I tucked into my slow-braised half shoulder of lamb with rosemary mash and redcurrant jus, while my partner sampled the pan-fried calf's liver with crispy back bacon and bubble and squeak cake - a delicious option of which I couldn't resist a taste.

Such was my guilt, I'm not sure I want to share my experience of the melt-in-the-mouth chocolate brownie, stacked high with ice cream and chocolate sauce, which I indulged in for dessert - but it was magnificent and entirely worth the calorie overdose. My dinner guest opted for an apple trifle tower, which was a treat for the eye as well as the palate. The Brickmakers can't be recommended highly enough, though I advise the brisk walk first, as you'll need a big appetite to experience this fantastic cuisine to its fullest.
