There is no finer treat on a cold autumn day than basking by an open fire in a traditional English pub, with a pint of real ale and some lovely food. The privately run Old Wheatsheaf is everything a pub should be - warm and cosy, with real food cooked by genuine people.

On arrival we were greeted by the attentive and knowledgable staff, with the scent of fresh flowers in our noses. We had the option of eating in the bar, but the separate dining room looked inviting with luxurious high-backed leather chairs and a characterful sideboard, so we took a table there among the pictures of cheese and wine. There is an extensive menu of pub favourites on hand as well as daily specials. To start, I opted for smoked mackerel paté with horseradish cream salad (£4.50), while my partner tucked into button mushrooms cooked in a creamy Stilton sauce (£4.75). Both starters left us in no doubt of the high standards of the chef. To follow, a hearty steak and merlot pie (£10.95) for me and delicate pan-fried sea bass fillets (£11.95) for my partner, complemented by tomato salsa, hollandaise sauce, sauté potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Both our main meals were outstanding and we soon started to plan our next visit. We couldn't say no to dessert - a perfectly executed creme brûlée (£4.95) and a wickedly indulgent caramel pecan brownie (£4.95) later, and The Old Wheatsheaf had become our new favourite restaurant.
