Billed as a 'country pub in the centre of town', we were intrigued by the prospect of visiting The Rockstone in Southampton's Bevois Valley. Housed within a classic Victorian building, with its distinctive facade and gardens, guests can expect an attractive traditional setting and a lively ambience. But this is no ordinary pub. The huge brick bar, with shelves brimming with brandies, whiskeys, gins and vodkas is not to be missed. We headed there for two glasses of crisp New Zealand sauvignon blanc whilst others enjoyed beers and rare ciders from around the world. Seated in one of the comfortable banquettes, we perused the menu, which read like a dream - the mix of traditional English dishes and an incredible choice of burgers were alluring indeed. I eventually decided on the tender duck breast (served rare, as requested) with juicy baked tomatoes, sweet potato chips, fresh salad and a side of crisp onion rings - I definitely made the right choice. As for my dining partner, he succumbed to temptation and went for a Volcano Burger, which came with a heat warning. The succulent chargrilled burger was topped with Mexicana Cheddar, fresh jalapeños and homemade Volcano sauce, made from slow-cooked Scotch bonnets, garlic and tropical fruits. Needless to say, it's not for the faint-hearted, but he thoroughly enjoyed the dish. Desserts were irresistible. I selected The Twirl with the Chocolate Tattoo, a well-presented double layer of moist chocolate cake smothered with dark chocolate ganache and crushed Twirls. It was delightfully rich. The White Clockwork Orange opposite me - smooth white chocolate and orange ganache topped with a lemon wedge - was equally impressive. This is definitely a food lovers' pub. Community-spirited owner Max Greenwood recently created the biggest hamburger in Britain, which he sold off in sections to raise money for a number of charities. As a local entrepreneur, he supports nearby independent suppliers and his thriving pub has also been awarded a number of Great British Pub awards, including Best Cider Pub in London and the South East (2014) and Best Spirits Pub in London and the South East (2014)
