A lively and colourful experience awaits guests at La Baronia. Conveniently situated minutes from the M27 and just off a main route into the city centre, chef Paul Thompson has brought an authentic taste of Mexico to Southampton.

With menus available for breakfast, lunch and dinner, there's always a reason to visit, though an evening meal offers the chance to see La Baronia in its full fairy-lit glory. We stepped inside to a hubbub of excited chatter, while the traditional trumpet sounds of a Mariachi band was played over loudspeakers, adding to the atmosphere.

Diners will be glad to spot their favourites on the menu, but why not be a little more adventurous? For a starter, look out for the street-food-inspired elote, a dish of roasted sweetcorn served with a spicy mayonnaise. Those with a larger appetite should consider La Baronia's house special pork ribs, served in a deliciously sweet and sticky raspberry and chipotle sauce and slow-smoked until the tender meat effortlessly falls off the bone.

There are plenty of main course options, all equally full of flavour. I tried the mole rojas, which, according to the menu, is considered to be Mexico's national dish. It's certainly a striking concoction: chicken cooked in a red sauce that's made with more than 20 ingredients, including chilli and chocolate. To finish, a tangy homemade lime slice with strawberry sorbet refreshed the palate and concluded a pleasant evening
