Olivier at the Red Lion
Located in the tiny village of Britwell Salome, on the edge of the stunning Chilterns, The Red Lion is a foodie hotspot. Priding itself on serving locally sourced food, it’s run by French chef, Olivier Bouet – formerly of the much-loved Sweet Olive in Aston Tirrold. The French-influenced menu features unpretentious classical dishes that are hearty, simple, big on flavour and expertly prepared.
Definitely a place for food lovers, Olivier’s passion for his dishes is evident. There’s plenty of choice with starters like Mediterranean fish soup and roasted goat’s cheese filo pastry with beetroot salad, but we opted for the oysters and the crispy duck salad, and weren’t disappointed. We followed these with a melt-in-the-mouth 12-hour Aga-cooked oxtail in puff pastry with red wine sauce and a superb onglet of beef with triple-cooked chips. Desserts are equally divine – we were unable to resist the chocolate delice with crème anglaise and homemade espresso ice cream, and the caramelised pineapple Carpaccio with mango and passion fruit sorbet.
Great for stopovers to enjoy the set lunch menu after a countryside walk, or for a special dinner treat, this dog-friendly pub offers great service, a cosy restaurant and a welcoming bar. There’s a real fire to make you feel snug in the winter months, and a garden in which to soak up the rays in summer.
