The Seven Stars is a great choice for lovers of historic buildings; it’s a picturesque former coaching inn located by the side of the largest village green in Europe. This beloved community pub was rescued from closure in 2013 by a committee of locals backed by a group of shareholders from the neighbourhood. The restaurant was converted from a 16th-century hay barn, retaining characterful features including wooden beams and slatted windows, creating an attractive space for relaxed dining. With a stable door and flagstone floor, the interior has an appealing rustic feel.

The food far exceeds what you might expect from a standard pub menu, with an excellent range of traditional British dishes and a few more adventurous options. To start, I plumped for the heritage beetroot salad, which comprised plenty of tasty beetroot, a mix of fresh leaves, delicious puff pastry biscuits, sumptuous blue cheese mousse and candied walnuts. My dining partner opted for pan-fried king prawns, which were enhanced by a gentle touch of garlic, ginger and chilli and served with warm, crispy ciabatta.

For the main event, I opted for the pan-fried salmon and was not disappointed; it was cooked to absolute perfection, and accompanied by generous wedges of piquant rosti and deliciously creamy leeks. My partner enjoyed a tender venison steak with Stilton mash and kale with the perfect bite.

We were unable to resist dessert, and settled on sticky banana cake and tart of the day. Accompanied by rum and raisin ice cream, my cake featured rum-poached bananas and chocolate chips and was utterly heavenly. The tart of the day was a cherry Bakewell with crisp pastry, and was enhanced by flavoursome cherry ice cream.

Whatever you decide to eat at the Seven Stars, there’s something to complement it on the excellent drinks menu, which showcases a variety of local ale, spirits and cocktails, and a good selection of gin, including a monthly special. The excellent food is backed up with friendly service, which is prompt and attentive. We left feeling content and found ourselves planning our return.
