Arriving at The Lambert Arms, we felt immediately at home, being warmly welcomed by reception staff. Our waiter Karl was a mine of culinary information (and of local golf courses too). Located midway between Birmingham and Oxford, just a moment's drive from Junction 6 of the M40, this fine halftimbered coaching inn has recently been extended, and now provides 44 bedrooms, beauty treatment rooms, a gymnasium, meeting rooms, a comfortable bar and an intimate dining room - offering a very high-quality food experience coupled with excellent service.

My guest ordered the ever-popular pan-seared scallops with asparagus spears and Parmesan purée. For me, the confit of wild rabbit salad with watercress, bean sprouts, walnuts and a sherry vinegar dressing was fresh, crisp and very tasty. In a meaty mood, my dinner companion could have chosen the Chalford Manor Hereford sirloin steak with hand-cut chips and portabella mushrooms; but on the next table the pan-roasted free-range corn-fed duck breast with vanilla mash and red wine jus looked too good to resist ordering. I settled upon the flash-fried fillet of sea bream accompanied by buttered asparagus, watercress, cherry tomatoes and Jersey Royals. Both dishes were excellent.

To accompany the food we initially selected the Piropo malbec from Argentina, which is popular for its intense aromas, deep colour and big, bold and spicy flavours, but chose, in deference to the delicately flavoured sea bream, the slightly lighter Casa de Piedra cabernet sauvignon from Chile - medium ruby in colour, ripe with delicious fruity notes and all too easy to drink. All the desserts looked enticing - the dark chocolate truffle with Grand Marnier anglaise; strawberry pannacotta with vanilla and mint balsamic glaze and shortbread; pickled ginger parfait with cinnamon-poached pear and caramel ice cream. We couldn't decide so Karl brought a selection of Lambert Arms desserts for two to share - simply brilliant. The homemade sorbet and the poached pear were outstanding, and would make an ideal choice to complete your meal.
