It's obvious when perusing the menu at The Half Moon in Cuxham that the food here is a cut above the rest. Boards outside boast 'traditional French' food and that's exactly what you get (aside from one Sunday roast, kept to uphold British pub tradition). This is not an eatery for fish and chips or shepherd's pie; instead, relish confit duck legs and cassoulets. The chips are thin-cut frites, made fresh, and often accompany the classic moules marinières or a juicy entrecôte steak. My partner and I, however, chose a fish soup, served with a jug of rouille, and a plate of rich and creamy foie gras. We followed with the duck breast with peaches, cooked slightly pink, and the boeuf bourguignon - marinated and then slowly roasted before being sliced in slabs and served over homemade tagliatelle, all of which simply melted in the mouth.

Their website describes them as 'a little piece of France set in a quintessential English atmosphere', and to an extent that's true. The thatched roof, low oak beams, old tiled floor and Brakspear bitter couldn't be more British, and neither could the locally sourced beef, chicken and eggs, plus the vegetables they grow and serve from their own garden - but the rest is definitely from across the Channel. I'm told in winter, vin chaud, fondues and tartiflettes are on offer too. I, for one, will definitely be back.
