Walking into the bar at The White Lion, we were greeted by a roaring fire and a cosy atmosphere created by the comfortable armchairs and warm decor. This warmth continues through to the restaurant, which is lit by church candles and decorated with an eclectic mix of antique furniture and fixtures, comfy chairs and walls covered with a prize collection of framed menus from many of the most famous restaurants in Europe - a clear sign of The White Lion's foodie focus. Almost everything at The White Lion is made fresh on site, including bread, pastries, preserves, ice cream and even home-smoked fish and meat.

With friendly and efficient service we were seated in the conservatory. The menu here changes often, dictated by what is fresh and in season, delivering new flavours and ideas. The White Lion has also developed a strict sourcing policy, and subsequently the standard of the food is exceptional. All their produce is free range or even wild, with line-caught fish and locally hunted game. Local butcher Macey's Organics keeps The White Lion in top-quality meat, and the restaurant has built up close working relationships with other local farms and suppliers. With all this in mind, we were keen to tuck into our first courses. My partner opted for delicate fresh crab meat muddled with chives, shallots and creme fraiche, served with a peppery rocket salad, and I chose the pigeon breast salad with shallots and a red wine sauce, which was equally tasty, the sweet tang of the sauce complementing the rich meat perfectly.

The White Lion's modern British pedigree is certainly evident in the fabulous daily changing menus. My main course comprised a beautiful fillet of certified Orkney Angus, chargrilled to perfection and served simply with peppercorn sauce and Dauphinois potatoes. Charlie (Charlotte) Partington, the general manager, is clearly proud of 'being the only pub restaurant in the area able to serve such high-quality produce', and we had to agree. Under the careful attention of head chef Adam Wrench, the food was simple perfection. My partner's grilled sea bass with mash, sauce vierge and baby pak choi was equally lovely, and the twice-weekly deliveries of hand-caught fish from Brixham's Andy North clearly make all the difference. Opting for a lighter dessert, I chose strawberry mousse with its own coulis - sheer delight. My partner opted for the more indulgent and traditional sticky toffee pudding, which was served with moreish toffee sauce and luscious Jersey cream. The eclectic wine list, with a lovely selection by the glass, is equally appealing, with house wines starting at just £13.95, and some truly fantastic reds and whites like the beautiful 2005 Gigondas, Domaine des Carbonnier - a snip at £32.95.

With the conscientious sourcing extended to the wonderful coffee from Origin Coffees (organic, Fairtrade and rainforest certified), well-kept Greene King real ales and truly memorable food, The White Lion is not to be missed.
