The pride shown by head chef Gavin Hill-Smith is clear to see in the quality of the fresh, locally sourced and seasonal ingredients with which he puts his daily changing menus together. Our starters were classics presented with a twist. I chose a crayfish, pineapple, avocado and rocket salad, served on potato skins with Marie Rose sauce, and my husband plumped for smoked haddock and Red Leicester rarebit. Our main courses were grilled halloumi on pea, mint, tomato and asparagus risotto, and steak and red wine pie with homemade pastry. It was out of pure gluttony that we ordered the black cherry frangipane tart with brandy sauce, but every indulgent bite was worth it. All of the dishes were beautifully crafted, flavoursome and very generously portioned.
