This village gem is clearly the hub of the community and those who discover it will see just why locals adore it. Built 300 years ago to house the workmen who built the nearby church, The Black Horse has been run by Kay and Brendan Keane for the past six years. Not only do they run this cosy pub, they also run the adjacent bed and breakfast.

The beer garden is ideal for children, with birds and rabbits making appearances to keep them entertained, and there are many walks nearby with wildlife to enjoy.

We sampled lunch on a Saturday and despite being exceptionally busy, the service was prompt and friendly. I enjoyed the Japanese breadcrumbed tiger prawns with chilli jam dip (£6.95) while my friend chose the deep fried brie (£5.95), which both got the thumbs up.

This was followed by a juicy rib-eye steak (£13.95) with all the trimmings 'substantial enough to satisfy even the largest of appetites - and the exceptionally good baked salmon with red pesto crust (£12.95). Despite feeling full, we then chose the chocolate lumpy bumpy, which is pure heaven for any chocoholic.

We both agreed we would return to the pub with our families, for Sunday lunch, and then walk it off in the nearby beautiful Black Park, attached to Pinewood Studios.
