Village Road, Dorney, Nr. Windsor, SL4 6QW
An independently family-run pub since 2009, The Palmer Arms is unpretentious by design and at the centre of village life. My favourite feature is the ample beer garden at the back, complete with a hidden play area and even a few chickens roaming around for good measure.

If a walk is in order to build up an appetite before lunch, check out the nearby Dorney Lake, which has been selected as a venue for the 2012 Olympics. For the really active, cycling is good along the Jubilee River - check out The Palmer Arms' website for directions before you set off.

Alongside the daily pub menu of sandwiches and jacket potatoes, The Palmer Arms boasts a fabulous à la carte selection. The menu offers a good mix of familiar and slightly more adventurous dishes. I opted for the breaded baked goat's cheese, pear and walnut salad followed by slow-roasted pork belly with Dauphinoise potatoes, spinach, apple purée and red wine jus. After all that indulgence I didn't really deserve pudding, but I simply couldn't resist the rhubarb, apple and pear crumble. There's a perfectly comprehensive wine list, some decent beers (both bottled and on tap) and a dedicated kids' menu too. Book now to avoid disappointment.
