If distinctive decor, superb service and contemporary European South-African-inspired food sound like your idea of dining heaven, head to The Cape Grand Café. This unique venue effortlessly transforms from a relaxed daytime retreat into an elegant restaurant in the evening; the romantic atmosphere will nudge you into indulging, whatever the time of day. My companion and I visited for dinner and took our time taking in the delightful restaurant menu. After a little help from our waitress, we chose tender quail breast with an assiette of tart rhubarb and soft quail's egg, and fresh crab with creme fraiche and grapefruit to start - both were exquisite. The main course upheld the high standards. I opted for the Wiltshire rabbit, which was perfectly cooked and beautifully accompanied by celery ragout and hazelnut praline, and my companion declared the fillet of John Dory with seafood lasagne and lobster bisque simply 'luxurious'. Each dish was imaginatively prepared using the finest seasonal ingredients, a trait The Cape team apply to every aspect of the business - they also provide outside catering for anything from corporate events to weddings. What could make your special day more unique than a traditional South African braai barbecue? To finish, we tucked into divine South African apricot malva pudding with macerated strawberries, washed down with a tipple from the comprehensive, globe-spanning wine list, and decided we'd be back soon to enjoy The Cape all over again
