As you enter Rickshaw Road you are transported to the streets of the Indian sub-continent, which have provided the inspiration for the food on offer. A rickshaw in one corner and an ox cart loaded with urns and produce in another add to the decor, while the wooden floors, wall panelling and rough wooden tables capture the essence of a bustling Indian city. This is a busy and vibrant place, full of diners enjoying their meals and cocktails, so booking is essential, especially at weekends. Once seated, I enjoyed the spectacle of the open kitchen, where we watched the kitchen staff working hard. The delectable food will have you returning again and again. You’ll find dishes not usually found in Indian restaurants, with delectable dishes from Sri Lanka and further afield, as well as traditional favourites. We shared a plate of starters including tandoori salmon, which I can honestly say was the tastiest I’ve ever eaten, as well as Gilafi seekh kebab, chicken tikka, chicken wings and tulsi jinga, a large king prawn cooked in the tandoor. The flavours were exceptional and all components were cooked beautifully. A bowl of kurkuri bhindi was also delivered to the table as an accompaniment. The thinly sliced, battered and deep-fried okra proved delicious and totally moreish. The methi chicken did not disappoint. Like the starters, this dish was full of flavour, as was the malabar prawn curry that my partner chose, comprising succulent tiger prawns cooked with roasted spices and coconut milk. This is in no way a typical Indian restaurant. Rickshaw Road offers a different approach to Indian food, within a fun and enjoyable atmosphere that’s more like a bistro. The food is exquisite; try it once and you are sure to return.
