High Street, Elham, Canterbury, CT4 6TD

Occupying a prime spot in the picturesque Elham Valley – which has been declared an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – The Abbot’s Fireside is the ideal destination for weary walkers and those looking to escape to the tranquillity of the countryside.

The pub has a welcoming atmosphere, which is enhanced by the charming decor – think medieval fireplaces, original leaded windows and exposed beams. The menu features crowd-pleasers like beef Bourguignon slow-braised in red wine and served with creamy mashed potato, glazed turnips and carrots. There are vegetarian, and vegan dishes as well as gluten- and dairy-free options – including on the extensive sandwich menu – so all are welcome at this charming pub. For something sweet select a mouth-watering dessert – discover the likes of dark chocolate ganache and peanut tart served with salted caramel sauce, or sticky date and ginger pudding with toffee sauce and custard. Alternatively, plump for the cheeseboard, with a selection of cheeses from the Cheesemakers of Canterbury. Guests can also enjoy indulgent cream tea on one of the sunny terraces in summer, or beside the roaring fire in the winter.

Upstairs, there are six beautifully styled bedrooms, which are named after national and local historical figures, and once hosted the Duke of Wellington as he prepared for the Battle of Waterloo. The Abbot’s Fireside is also a designated wedding venue, capable of catering for your dream day with no venue fee and everything under one elegant roof.
