The Bricklayers Arms is in a pretty lakeside spot at the end of the scenic Darent Valley Path, and lovely views of Longford Lake can be seen from its windows, but its appeal is certainly not only down to its picture-perfect location. At this well-frequented dining and drinking spot, which is made up of three terraced cottages, guests can expect the very best in hospitality, some top-notch home cooking and a well-kept selection of beers from local, independent brewery, Harveys, served straight from barrels at the back of the bar.

The menu changes daily, so even those for whom The Bricklayers is a regular haunt will always be able to find something new and exciting to sample. If the anticipation of waiting for your starters to arrive is all too much, you might like to nibble on moreish warm cherry tomato focaccia with olive oil and balsamic dip (enough for two to share), before tucking into a delectable first course such as grilled halloumi salad with pesto dressing or Scottish gravadlax with
granary bread and butter. For the main event, meat lovers should look to the likes of classic 10oz Cottage Farm rump steak served with chunky chips, peas, mushrooms and grilled tomato, while fish fans will be pleased with dishes such as whole roasted lemon sole served with caper butter, salad and chips. With comforting, imaginative food like this on offer, there's surely no better place to rest and refuel after a walk around Longford Lake or the nearby Knole Park
