The Golden Grove
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
Situated just a stone’s throw from Chertsey’s train station, a warm and inviting atmosphere, outstanding food and expertly chosen real ale await all at The Golden Grove. Following a period of refurbishment in late 2015, stripped wooden floors, comfortable leather chairs, attractive ironwork lighting and tasteful modern artwork now create a light and airy setting that’s perfect for relaxed, unpretentious dining. Outside, a large suntrap lawn, surrounded by tall trees, is the perfect place to enjoy a drink and let little ones play in the summer months.
Food at The Golden Grove is seasonal, fresh and locally sourced where possible. Everything is prepared on-site and portions are generous, so you may need to pace yourself. I began with a starter of lightly battered calamari which was well presented, the batter crisp and delicate. My main of roasted vegetable crumble, comprising aubergine, courgette and tomato, was flavoursome and well-suited to the season. Meanwhile, my dining partner’s pan-fried duck breast, served with rosemary potatoes, was honey-sweet and cooked to succulent perfection. For ardent meat-lovers, The Golden Grove’s signature prime beefburger is a tried-and-tested favourite, served with hand-cut chunky chips and homemade coleslaw.
If you have a sweet-tooth and room to spare, prepare to make a difficult decision. For us, the choice came down to chocolate brownie with melted Belgian chocolate sauce or The Golden Grove’s delicious cheesecake of the day. With outdoor heaters on the terrace, this is the place to bring the tribe – even in a British summer.
