Mermaid Street, Rye, TN31 7EY
Walking through The Mermaid's doors is like stepping back in time. The inn is one of the oldest in England, and every corner is steeped in history. The Mermaid Inn has been through a great deal since it opened in 1156 - it was set on fire by French invaders in 1377, and was frequented by smugglers in the 1700s. In more recent years, the inn has been a popular haunt for writers, artists and stars of stage and screen, including Charlie Chaplin, Pierce Brosnan and Johnny Depp, as well as being treated to visits from Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen Mother and Prince Edward.

The Mermaid's restaurant has been deservedly awarded an AA rosette for its accomplished British and French fare. Alongside the extensive à la carte menu, there is a broad range of vegetarian dishes, a list of house specialities and an impressive Sunday lunch selection that's not to be missed. Guests in need of a quiet drink can relax by the huge open fireplace (one of the largest in England) or sit out on the inn's lovely patio. Traditional draught beers, spirits and wines from the well-stocked cellars are always available. Those wanting to extend their stay can book one of the inn's well-appointed guest rooms, which boast cosy stone fireplaces and original beams - the perfect getaway for those who love olde-worlde charm.
