Among cobbled streets and tiny cottages, standing majestic over the Rye Estuary with views of Camber Castle and the sea, lies the magnificent Hope Anchor Hotel. Dating back to the 18th Century, the inn has long been a favourite haunt for friendly visitors as well as distinctly reprobate ones - riotous pistol-toting smugglers, the Tenterden Gang, revelled here with snifters of rum and used to hide in the pub's secret tunnels to avoid the law and rival gangs.

Today The Hope Anchor thankfully enjoys a more sedate atmosphere - but the log fires, elegant restaurant and wonderful food will still tempt you to hide away here. Dip into tuna and sundried tomato fishcakes with chilli marmalade, or delight in tiger prawns, tomato and coriander in mouth-watering garlic butter to begin. Second courses include imaginative vegetarian options, famous Romney Marsh lamb with an original mint and beetroot salsa and red wine jus, and sea bass with blush tomatoes and pesto. If the Customs House isn't immediately after your buccaneer's booty then stop a while for a homemade dessert of chocolate and Tia Maria fondant or treacle tart. Then, for a perfect finale, tip a nod to the past and have a Calypso Coffee in the name of Captain Kidd himself.
