The Black Horse
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
The Black Horse in Hookwood boasts a charming atmosphere, excellent food and a great range of drinks, all within just a few minutes of Gatwick. There’s plenty of outside seating for summer days, while a homely wooden interior keeps you warm and cosy on chilly evenings; it’s truly an inn for all seasons.
The menu showcases traditional pub grub alongside contemporary gastropub-style dishes, so you’re bound to find something that takes your fancy. We were most impressed with the plates on offer, and took our time choosing from the plethora of tempting options. My partner’s starter of prawn and avocado cocktail in delicately spiced Marie Rose sauce was light and full of flavour, while my chicken, duck and red onion terrine was sensational. To follow, I relished the refreshing Buddha bowl, which was packed with treats including sage-roasted squash, crunchy slaw, turmeric-roasted cauliflower, courgette ribbons, roasted chickpeas, pickled red onions and pomegranate seeds. A hearty chicken Caesar burger didn’t disappoint my hungry companion, who savoured a succulent chargrilled fillet stacked with crisp smoked bacon, Monterey Jack and Caesar mayo, accompanied by crisp fries and garlic mayo. We rounded things off with a delightful helping of raspberry and frangipane tart complemented by almond cream, and a silky smooth white chocolate and berry panna cotta.
