If you didn't spot the 'Michelin-recommended' sign upon the door, The Golden Ball could be mistaken for a reasonably typical country pub - albeit a very scenic one. However, its humble appearance is deceptive. Before even sampling a mouthful of the exceptional food, the attention to detail and professionalism of the staff make it apparent that this is a restaurant of the highest calibre.

Chef Stephen Luscombe's (chef profile page 47) menu offers around half a dozen tempting options for each course, including classic combinations with a Mediterranean or Asian twist. To start, I sampled the carpaccio of tuna with tasty sesame, perfectly complemented by fennel salad. An exquisitely tender confit duck leg then arrived with a sweet yet gorgeously tangy cherry sauce. My souffl é offered a successful balance of rich, decadent fl avours and wonderfully light textures. The varied, reasonably priced wine list also impressed, with many labels available by the glass.

Enough of this pub's heritage has been maintained to ensure a relaxed setting without pretension, where the clientele can sit back and enjoy beautiful surroundings and outstanding food. Luscombes' excellent food can also be enjoyed via their event catering service and hampers - or, for a more in-depth experience, cookery courses are available twice a year. Without doubt, this is a very special establishment.
