Thanks to its Edwardian origins as the Shire Hall, The Forbury Hotel has imposing architectural grandeur. Over the years it has been embellished with wonderful examples of design, art and craftsmanship, making it a joy to explore.

The Cerise Restaurant on the lower floor is modern and minimalistic, in stunning contrast to the opulence of the building. The menu offers a fine choice of traditional British favourites with a Mediterranean touch, enhanced by the chef's sense of fun and adventure. The quality of the ingredients is superb, the portions are generous and the presentation is breathtaking. The staff are friendly, relaxed and knowledgeable and clearly want to help you make the most of your dining experience.

As expected from the presentation, the dishes were divine. My husband started with confit of duck leg hash sandwiched between spinach layers and topped with a poached duck's egg, the white of which was all a-swirl in the duck jus. My choice for a main was a sesame-crusted loin of yellowfin tuna with glazed beetroot, braised fennel and yellow and black polenta with little explosions of taste in the garnishes of wasabi, horseradish and pea shoots. We both finished with cooling, clean fruit-flavoured ice cream dishes and relaxed in total contentment.

The Forbury is a place to impress, celebrate special occasions, share with friends, and experience masterpieces of culinary art, but also somewhere you can just enjoy being spoilt
