Becketts has been a well-regarded Southsea fixture for 30 years, upholding a glowing reputation for first-class food, drink and service. Its current owners took the helm at the start of 2016, bringing with them a clear vision for the future of the restaurant. Their concept blends a stylish rebrand and outreach to new clientele with preservation of the restaurant’s existing loyal client base – they’re dedicated to sustaining the establishment’s authenticity and character.
Becketts’ Grade II listed premises underwent a six-month period of renovation, bringing new life to the restaurant’s four floors. Handmade wooden furnishings, cool marblework, soft lighting and a state-of-the-art kitchen all contribute to a stylish, modern and inviting setting for all manner of occasions. The acquisition of the building next door has meant Becketts has expanded again, the courtyard room is the latest addition nestled inside the stylish venue. This hosts Becketts’ deli where diners can stop by for breakfast, brunch or lunch or pop in to enjoy shakes, smoothies, hot drinks, pastries and cakes.
Dining at Becketts is an all-encompassing experience, with all elements taken into careful consideration. The kitchen has perfected its exemplary menu of traditional and modern European gastronomic delights, preparing everything onsite and making seasonal use of locally grown and reared produce to the fullest extent. Starters include pan-seared scallops with sweetcorn three ways – a spiced sweetcorn purée, grilled corn and sweetcorn fritters. Another starter that exceeds expectations is the charred mackerel with oyster mayonnaise and sea herb and radish remoulade. The mains are just as exciting. There are a number of innovative vegetarian and vegan dishes like the wild mushroom open lasagne and spiced shiitake broth, as well as several meat options. The crispy pork belly served with sweet potato and apple compression, rhubarb ketchup, fresh apple and charred gem lettuce is a top choice. The bar, meanwhile, offers a broad selection of world wine alongside a compelling list of cocktails, and stocks an impressive range of beer and ale, covering all bases.
With Moules Tuesday, Prosecco Wednesday, live music on Saturday and Becketts’ famous bottomless brunch available every weekend, there will always be a reason to return regardless of when you visit. Keep your eyes peeled for Becketts’ boutique hotel rooms opening this summer.
