Wolvercote is a village that is part of the city of Oxford, situated three miles northwest of the centre, overlooking the historic and picturesque Port Meadow. You can't miss the pretty Red Lion with its extensive garden and outdoor seating area. It is the epitome of a decent English pub, and offers a menu that is both satisfying and very reasonably priced. The home-cooked food is beautifully presented and bursting with flavour. Local beers are also served along with an inexpensive wine list. Sitting in the cosy restaurant, our starters were soup of the day (tomato, piping hot and delicious) and deep-fried chicken goujons with a sticky chilli sauce, raita and mango dip. Also on offer were platters for sharing; fish, meat or cheese amongst others.

Our main courses were a unique Brakspear beer-battered cod with chunky chips and mushy peas, plus pork casserole served with sautéed potatoes. The fish was deliciously crunchy on the outside; the pork melted in the mouth and was cooked with carrot, celery and red kidney beans and contained just the right amount of seasoning. For desserts we chose sticky toffee pudding and chocolate fudge cake. James Knox has been the landlord since January and has been promoting the pub by introducing very popular steak, sausage and curry nights together with a Sunday and mid-week carvery so successful that pre-booking a table is essential. Families are particularly welcome. I really can't recommend this pub enough
