It was 40 years ago that Ali Rojob first opened his restaurant on Walton Street and brought the fl avours of his Bangladeshi heritage to Oxford diners. Today, sons Kawsar and Dildar can be found at the helm, continuing the proud tradition of fantastic cuisine in an intimate, modern surrounding.
With the emphasis on freshly cooked favourites and daily specials drawn from the family's own recipe book, the team also strives to offer interesting options when it comes to their carefully selected wines and beers.

Ordering a selection of dishes to share is the ideal way to sample The Standard. After the obligatory poppadoms and chutneys, we split the chotpoti starter comprising chickpea, egg and potato in a rich coriander and tamarind sauce. The special, on the bone chicken with pumpkin, was a vibrant dish brimming with colour and fl avour; alongside it, a tender and smoky lamb shashlik. Side orders of palak paneer (spinach and cheese), brinjal bhaji (lightly spiced aubergines), pilau rice and garlic naan more than satisfied us. Somehow we found just enough room for a lovely little palate-cleansing mango and lychee sorbet from the impressive dessert menu.

My new personal favourite, The Standard really raises the bar - it's the perfect stop off during a night out in this part of town.
