Cotswold Lodge Hotel, 66a Banbury Road, Oxford, OX2 6JP
The Cotswold Lodge Hotel enjoys a perfect situation in the North Oxford conservation area. The elegant building is home to Restaurant 66A, a stylish dining destination whose modernity beautifully balances the classic Victorian architecture of its surroundings.

It was a cool, rainy evening when we visited, but the welcome was warm and within minutes we were making our choices from both the à la carte and weekly changing table d'hôte menu. Both demonstrated the imaginative style of the chef, who is particularly conscious of food miles and strives to use seasonal produce from the hotel-owner's farm and other local suppliers wherever possible. Somewhat spoiled for choice, we began with belly pork and fig rillette served with a garlic emulsion, and a smoked duck, caramelised red onion and peach tart with soy-and-sesame dressing. Both were triumphs of taste, texture and presentation. We followed with delicately poached monkfish wrapped in smoked salmon and a more robust dish of pan-fried chicken breast stuffed with black pudding. Desserts were equally creative: chilled orange and Tia Maria soup and a passion fruit and apple tart with dark chocolate sauce.

Vegetarians are very well-catered for and the wine list is comprehensive, with choices to suit all pockets. Fellow guests were both residents and non-residents and there was a gentle hum of approval from all sides - we certainly look forward to returning.
