Summertown Wine café is unique a place with masses of appeal - a lively, friendly café during the day and an elegant wine bar by night, plus a comprehensive wine shop throughout. The owners have chosen the term 'joie de vivre' (joy of life, in case your Franglais is a little rusty) to capture the essence of what they hope Summertown Wine café means to their customers. They've designed a place where you can relax and escape for a while from the crazy world we find ourselves in.

The Summertown Wine café team's passion is wine - they scour the world to find the best boutique wines, from small growers whose wine represents a passion, not a product. Their wines are too small for the supermarkets, but are often the most interesting and the best value. Summertown Wine café allows you to discover these fantastic wines by tasting them. 'Wine is wonderfully subtle and subjective; so we believe that before you buy you should taste it first.' At the Summertown Wine café, you can sample 12 boutique wines for only £5 - for free if you buy two or more bottles to take home. Every evening between 5pm and 7pm is the Wine café 'happy hour', with house wines at £2 per glass, the 'monthly selection' at £3, and Perrier-Jou't Champagne at only £4 a glass - what better way to get your evening off to a fantastic start. On Wednesday and Thursday nights, they host a barbecue in the sunny garden for £10 per person. Summertown Wine café regularly hosts winemakers' dinners and other events, details of which you can find on their website.

Raymond Blanc, writing for The Guardian, said of Summertown Wine café, 'It has a lovely ambience, and the young owners really know their stuff - I have discovered so many new wines through them. They don't have a kitchen, and just serve a few snacks - some paté, a nice chunk of ham. If I get hungry, I nip across the road and bring back a pizza to eat with my wine'. What more recommendation could you need? Don't just take my (and Raymond's) word for it, discover this Oxford star for yourself, and soon.
