As the name suggests, this restaurant is 4500 miles from Delhi. Luckily for us, it's just a few minutes' walk from the centre of Oxford. Inside, the restaurant is calm, cool and clean; jazz softly plays in the open-plan dining area, while an open-display theatre kitchen buzzes in full view.

From start to finish, the service was friendly and attentive. My partner and I were handed menus (hefty volumes, by the way), which listed a collection of exciting dishes, from traditional to modern, all with an easy-to-understand spice rating. To make your decision a task less hard, the dishes are divided into sections, referencing budgets and tastes - from the 'student banquet' at £11.95 to the 'gourmet banquet' costing £19.95. There's also a comprehensive vegetarian section. Within five minutes of ordering, the starters arrived.

I had the vegetable samosas, which were delicious, while the accompanying side dish of rocket and strawberries was an unexpected touch of magic. My usual curry of choice is chicken balti, and what a balti I had, excelling in freshness and flavour. For a very interesting and authentic dessert, ask for the shahi gulab jamun (traditional homemade sweet dumplings). The restaurant's 'mission statement', so manager Kapil tells us, is to deliver authentic North Indian curries in an authentic Indian restaurant. Well, mission accomplished.
