A rather unassuming entrance on George Street leads down a flight of stairs to this marvellous Chinese restaurant. Shown to our table and offered a generous bowl of prawn crackers with an addictive spicy sauce, we were made to feel instantly welcome by the friendly waiting staff. Throughout the evening they were always willing to help - and even offered a tip or two on how to wield our chopsticks. The menu is extensive and very thoughtfully set out, which makes choosing a dish much easier. We began with the starter deal - five different starters selected by the chef for just £8 - a great choice for anyone keen to try something new. For our main, the chefs urged us to try the Assam vegetable hot pot and from our first helping we understood why. The restaurant staff seemed very proud of their hot pot, and rightly so - it was superb and a real treat to try a Malaysian-Chinese dish that not many Chinese restaurants serve. The chefs at Koi of Oxford have a passion for Chinese food and this really shines through in the diverse and delicately crafted dishes they serve. The quality certainly wasn't lost on my dining partner, who kept exclaiming: 'I've never had a Chinese like it'. In need of traditional Chinese food made with care and precision?
