A beautiful 15th-Century building overlooking the gardens of Christ Church College, this former Bishop's Palace has been gracefully restored to capture the style and ambience of 1930s Shanghai. Shanghai 30's serves the finest regional Chinese dishes; and with a menu that changes with the seasons, it's guaranteed your meal will be cooked with quality produce.

The menu will please traditionalists and adventurous diners alike, with plenty of Chinese classics as well as more unusual dishes to choose from. The former can tuck into favourites such as salt and pepper squid to start, followed by a much-loved main of crispy pork, while those looking to try something a bit different might begin with Champagne spare ribs, before enjoying crispy beef in the chef's special berry sauce.

We were presented with salted peanuts, prawn crackers and a mix of cucumber and carrot pieces in a sugar, vinegar and ginger sauce as an appetiser - an ideal accompaniment to our glasses of Moutard Brut Reserve Champagne. To start, we had spicy beef salad - grilled and shredded tender beef fillet with onion, tomato, coriander, lemon slices and fresh chilli in a light soy sauce - and probably the best crispy aromatic duck I have ever tasted. My wife then enjoyed honey-roasted chicken, marinated, sliced and served in a citrus soy sauce with five other spices. I had sizzling seafood in black pepper sauce, which consisted of stir-fried squid, juicy prawns and scallops with onions and peppers in a white wine and black pepper sauce. We also shared a portion of the chef's special
duck fried rice.

It's hard to overstate our delight at the combination of flavours and texture we tasted. Needless to say, a further visit will be necessary. A convenient takeaway service is available, but I highly recommend booking a table and enjoying Shanghai 30's first-rate service and individual atmosphere. With its exquisitely prepared and presented cuisine, this restaurant offers a unique dining experience, and remains the place to go for a special occasion
