131 High Street, Oxford, OX1 4DH

Famous for showcasing strange taxidermied animals and technological marvels of the 17th Century, this delightful pub in the centre of Oxford is steeped in history and olde-worlde charm. Much of the interior dates back to the 1500s, when the building, which originally existed as a tenement house, was rebuilt as a tavern. Today, you'll find an eclectic range of real ales and a menu of high-quality British favourites, including Gloucester Old Spot sausages and mash, slow-braised pork belly with all the trimmings and gammon steak served with hand-cut chips. Also on offer is a range of freshly prepared sandwiches, hand-made burgers and homemade pies. The venue is renowned for its fish and chips, which comprises premium line-caught cod fillet encased in crispy beer-batter, which is made using the pub's own Nicholson's Ale. Serving delicious food and ale in cosy setting, it's clear why The Chequers is such a popular option
