Castle Yard, Oxford Castle, Oxford, OX1 1AY
A place of intrigue and history, Oxford Castle was built after the Norman Conquest in 1071. Through the centuries, Oxford Castle became a place of incarceration, until 1996 when its jailers hung up their keys for the last time. A visit to the castle today is an interactive experience, with costumed tour guides bringing 1,000 years of history to life. Until 1 June 2014, visitors can also enjoy a photography exhibition put together by two talented Oxford Photographic Society members.

All that exploring is bound to work up an appetite and Café 1071 is set in the castle's courtyard, offering great views of the tower. Sit down with a cup of the best coffee in town as you admire the Victorian photography of past prisoners on the walls. Made daily on the premises, lunchtime snacks include sandwiches (from £2.95) and panini (from £3.45), the bread for which is made using grain from the Oxfordshire area that is milled and baked locally too. Baked potatoes or bowls of vitamin-packed soup are ideal if you fancy something hot; and those with a sweet tooth should sample the handmade cakes and traybakes. The café is licensed, so you can enjoy a relaxing glass of wine or chilled beer with your selection. This comfortable and convenient spot is open all year round
