This luxurious hotel is the kind of place where happy memories are made. Tankersley Manor is located on the main road into Sheffield as you leave the M1, but once inside you feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life; such is the serenity of this small corner of Yorkshire. Inside there are 99 exquisite bedrooms - spread throughout the original manor building and the hotel's new wing - fantastic leisure and spa facilities, numerous meeting rooms and unmissable dining opportunities at the Manor Restaurant and the Onward Arms pub, both open to hotel guests and visitors alike.

The Onward Arms serves a mix of top-quality real ales, wines and spirits and a menu of delicious home-cooked meals - all competitively priced and available seven days a week - as well as a traditional Yorkshire carvery.

The Manor Restaurant is open from Monday to Saturday and promises 'great food and fantastic service, with a pinch of Yorkshire charm'. Each part of this pledge is fulfilled in the 110-cover restaurant. On the evening of our visit, the à la carte menu offered a tempting selection, including classic British dishes with plenty of modern, creative flair, plus a range of dishes from the grill. I began with the wood pigeon and spinach terrine wrapped in Parma ham, whose earthy flavours were balanced beautifully by a sweet onion and vanilla chutney, while my companion tucked into seared tuna Nicoise, which demonstrated the skill of the kitchen team with conviction. The thoughtful staff then perfectly timed the next course, leaving us to savour the relaxed ambience over a glass of wine from the expertly compiled list before our mains arrived. The lamb rump was perfectly pink, letting the full flavour shine and resulting in that melt-inthe- mouth texture I was hoping for, and creamy roast garlic and Parmesan mash made the perfect accompaniment. My partner's delicate grilled sea bream with crushed new potatoes and spiced Provencal sauce arrived looking simply beautiful, the piquant sauce brimming with crab, shallots and garlic. To finish we opted for two wonderfully light desserts - the chilled lemon soufflé, with raspberries and a tuille biscuit, and the exotic fruit Florentine with mango and passion fruit sauce - rounding off our meal in style.

So whether on a business trip, enjoying a spa break or simply getting away from it all, make time for a meal at the homely Onward Arms or the luxurious Manor Restaurant. This hotel's service is superb and the food is fantastic - a true Yorkshire delight.
