Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
Pikes Hill, Lyndhurst, SO43 7AS
I arrived at Waterloo Arms, a 17th-Century pub complete with thatched roof, on a wet October evening. On entering, I was delighted to discover a cosy interior and friendly faces - just what I needed after battling the terrible weather. The menu features simple hearty fare such as sausages with bubble and squeak, and favourites like liver and bacon. To start, my companion and I devoured whitebait with homemade tartare sauce and olives. For my main, I chose tender grilled duck supreme with seasoned mash and cranberry jus - very comforting indeed. My companion opted for salmon en croute, featuring moist salmon and spinach wrapped in flaky filo pastry served with new potatoes and vegetables. For an added touch of nostalgia we rounded off the meal by sharing a wonderfully wobbly creme caramel - we were far too full to manage one each, but we're convinced we'll conquer more next time.
