Dating back to the 19th century, this friendly establishment has all the hallmarks of a classic pub, including beamed ceilings, log fires and a well-stocked bar, not to mention an original turnpike tollhouse in the grounds. Yet it also boasts those little touches that make visiting special – for example, there’s no need to order at the bar, as you’ll be treated to table service.
The Monkey House is dedicated to offering a relaxed experience, with an attention to detail that makes drinking and dining here a cut above. The kitchen team creates all the food in-house, and diners can enjoy classic dishes such as steaks, pies and hearty Sunday lunches, perhaps with a pint of real ale from the Dancing Cows Brewery in Lymington or a similar guest ale. There are also regular special offers on the wine selection to take advantage of. The pub was originally called The Crown, but became known as The Monkey House because the landlady had a pet monkey – just one of the unusual things about this pub that makes it stand out.
