A charming country pub offering a personal touch, The Royal Oak has been around since the 18th Century. Roaring fires and interior beams and brickwork, combined with tasteful decor and sublime food, make this a must-visit destination. On our visit we were suitably impressed by the wide and varied choice on the Oak's regular menu and specials boards, which is updated daily to reflect what's best in seasonal, local produce. Our selections showed the team are clearly writing up winners.

To start, a bowl of rich and satisfyingly hearty homemade minestrone soup arrived with crunchy croutons and as I tucked in my partner was licking her lips at the sight of her dreamy haddock and salmon fishcake, accompanied by a refreshing salad and yoghurt dip. Both dishes proved excellent prequels to the main event. As it is a Royal Oak favourite, I plumped for the steak and ale pie: a light buttery pastry case full of slow-cooked, tender steak in rich gravy, complemented by fresh vegetables and some smooth, creamy mash. My partner, meanwhile, enjoyed crisp and chunky chips alongside perfectly slow-cooked and meaty barbecue ribs. Both main courses were very generously portioned, but don't worry if your hunger is less than heroic; The Royal Oak offers a small appetite option. If you have room for the hat-trick, the dessert menu offers everything from home comforts to the downright devilish. The extensive wine list also includes helpful notes as to which dishes each wine will best suit
