Rhinefield Road, Brockenhurst, Southampton, SO42 7QB
Set in the New Forest, this is a truly spellbinding place. Approaching the four-star Rhinefield House Hotel via a majestic drive, we encountered deer grazing among the trees and the most stunning autumnal scenery, and our first glimpse of the Tudor and gothic architecture drew gasps of admiration.

The Brasserie is one of the hotel's two eateries. Despite the grandeur of the setting, formality is soon dispelled by the relaxed atmosphere. Restaurant manager Lucy welcomed us into the sumptuous lounge-bar where we perused the menu. It draws heavily on locally sourced produce with dishes such as New Forest venison stew and Poole Bay fish cakes. The conservatory-style brasserie is light and airy, with venetian blinds, rattan chairs and stylish slate placemats providing a sleek modern feel. Starters of caesar salad and a charming Welsh rarebit with sun-dried tomato and rocket salad proved simple fare that looked and tasted sensational. Rib-eye steak was cooked to perfection and showcased deft touches with garlic mushrooms and confit tomato accompaniments. Darne of salmon, crisp outside and meltingly smooth inside, was beautifully complemented by a brown shrimp and caper sauce. To finish, desserts of creme brûlée with shortbread biscuits and chocolate torte with clotted cream were irresistible. This really is a taste of affordable luxury in a magical setting.
