The friendly Red Lion aptly calls itself 'a quintessential New Forest pub' and will delight pub lovers hankering after something traditional.

The country equestrian theme is charming, with huge log fires, low beams, copper pans, beams and plenty of intimate corners. Even on chilly evenings you can eat inside or out, thanks to the patio heaters. The bar area leads off to cosy nooks and crannies, with low lights and candles lending a homely feel. There is even an original stable room complete with tack.

The barman found the perfect wine for my mood. Happily, most are served by the glass from the wellkept cellar. The pub is justly proud of its newly awarded 'New Forest Marque' for sourcing fresh New Forest produce for meals and snacks, including traditional favourites such as sausages and mash, foresters chicken, locally caught fish, organic beef and wild rabbit - which I chose and enjoyed thoroughly. Starters ranging from £4 to £6 and mains from £8 to £14 are homemade by head chef Stuart, and Angela's puds are reasonably priced and exceptionally tempting - the grown-up chocolate fridge cake with crystallised ginger is particulary good.

Inside, or in the patio garden, the New Forest hospitality found at The Red Lion will warm the cockles of your heart and stomach.
