Hilltop, Beaulieu, SO42 7YR

The Royal Oak Beaulieu dates back to 1848 and boasts a stunning rural location on the edge of the village of Beaulieu. With views of the New Forest’s famous heaths, this classic country inn is a popular stop for cyclists, walkers and horse-riders – you’ll even find five horse corrals in the garden. Having recently undergone refurbishment, The Royal Oak offers a charming new dining room and snug while retaining its original charm and character. The log burning fire keeps the pub cosy and a small gallery of pictures and photographs offers an insight into the establishment’s history.

Begin your visit with a trip to the bar. There’s a vast array of quality cask ale on offer, including Ringwood Best and Ringwood Fortyniner, as well as a varied selection of cider, spirits and mixers. For those who prefer grape to grain, there’s a list of wine sourced from around the world. Choose a chilled glass of white for a hot summer’s day or a warming red to accompany your food.

The menu at The Royal Oak caters for all tastes and the attentive team works hard to accommodate special dietary requirements. Dishes vary seasonally, all of which is homemade and freshly prepared on the premises each day. You can expect delights such as apple-cured salmon and chilli and coriander arancini to start your meal, while the list of sharing platters comprises a mouth-watering charcuterie board and baked Camembert with garlic, rosemary and walnuts.

For those popping in for a midday meal, both the ploughman’s lunch and the farmer’s lunch are popular choices and sandwiches, which are served on your choice of granary bread or ciabatta, are light and tasty.

If you’re craving something more filling, why not plump for a pizza? Cooked in a pizza oven, options range from a traditional Margherita to a vegetarian choice topped with goat’s cheese, tomato, caramelised onion marmalade and mixed mushrooms. Alternatively, perhaps you’ll opt for one of the pub classics: the maple-glazed pork belly is sweet, succulent and full of flavour and the steak and ale shortcrust pie is homemade and hearty. On Sundays, guests at The Royal Oak are also treated to a delectable Sunday roast, complete with sides of seasonal vegetables, Yorkshire puddings and lashings of gravy.
