We arrived at The Royal Oak, which boasts a beautiful setting in the New Forest, and took in our surroundings while sipping a glass of merlot selected from a broad range of wine. The warmth of the atmosphere is enhanced by the rustic charm of the decor and the friendly and attentive staff. Choosing from the menu proved difficult, but I was thrilled with my starter of mushrooms in cider and rosemary. For the main course, I couldn’t resist the perfectly tender duck breast served with well-seasoned fondant potato and fresh kale. The delicious dish was sweetened with a redcurrant reduction and presented beautifully. Sticky toffee pudding with creamy custard brought the meal to a close, and had me vowing to return again soon for the Sunday roast. You’ll also find daily specials, themed food events every month and a beer and cider festival in the summer. For those in search of local, home-cooked food in a picturesque setting, you can’t do better than The Royal Oak.
