Stepping off Paddington's bustling Craven Road and into Assaha is like entering a different world; if you want an all-round experience of Lebanese culture then this is most definitely the place to go.

I visited with absolutely no knowledge of Lebanese fare, and as a vegetarian I was a little concerned. My meat-eating companion - an expert in the cuisine of the Middle East - was less perturbed. But I needn't have worried, as I most certainly did not go hungry. As we perused the menu (written in Arabic as well as English) a plate of crudités arrived with a bowl of hummus. I started with halloumi, which our waiter insisted I try alongside tabbouleh and mutabbal, while my friend had a plate of tasty mixed pies. For my main course I chose moussaka, which was bursting with the flavour of juicy tomatoes and fresh, plump aubergines. My companion ordered the mixed grill and was presented with a huge plate of shish kebab, kofte, lamb cutlet and chicken. This was followed by a perfectly presented plate of Lebanese speciality desserts containing flavours such as cinnamon and custard, and one which reminded me of a delicious rice pudding.

With its amazing interior of beautiful stone walls, adorned with antiques and a myriad of alcoves, eating at Assaha is certainly a very different dining experience - for all the right reasons.
