Perfectly at home in its charming village setting, The General Elliot looks like a classic country pub. This situation, along with boards outside boasting 'the best Sunday dinner' (served midday until 6.15pm), might conjure up images of open fires and antique paraphernalia, but once inside you'll find yourself in an open and stylish restaurant and bar.

While the menu is, in part, traditional, it also features refined, modern dishes and offers a selection to suit every palate. To start we tried the special of deep-fried halloumi with a cool salsa and rocket, and the Greek meze selection. The meze included homemade tzatziki, hummus and falafel, accompanied by stuffed vine leaves, feta and olive salad, warm pitta and more griddled halloumi. The current menu also offers fantastic choice for fish lovers, so we plumped for two of these dishes to follow: smoked haddock with creamy pea and leek risotto topped with a poached duck egg, and a superb West Indian fish curry with rice and Bombay potatoes. Both were extremely well executed.

Completing the evening with pistachio creme brulée with raspberry compote and lemon curd cheesecake with blueberry compote, which were truly as good as they sound, we left two very satisfied diners, pleased to have discovered this unexpected gem. Four-legged friends are permitted in the attractive beer gardens, staff are friendly and everybody is welcome. Should you need further reason to visit, there is currently a special offer from Monday to Friday (midday until 6pm) and Saturday (midday until 3pm), when two courses will cost you just £10.95
