The pretty village of Appleton, a short drive from the A420, is home to the wonderfully traditional Plough Inn. We visited on a cold November night and the welcome from a crackling fire and friendly staff was much needed and comforting. The cosy bar area was the setting for our meal, where much thought has gone into the decor - contemporary in its simplicity, but respectful of the building's age and history. This is a place you could settle in for the whole afternoon and evening.

The menu is appealing, concise and uncomplicated. To start, opt as we did for the crispy, fresh and flavoursome fishcakes, and the soup of the day - a red pepper and parsnip combination that was sweet and creamy and thoroughly warmed the cockles. Our mains were devoured with equal enjoyment. We took great pleasure in a large and juicy cut of steak with chunky chips and salad, and the classic beef lasagne seasoned by an expert hand.

Feeling content, we moved onto the desserts, one of which was made by owner Alison Beland. She did a superb job of producing the effortlessly light and velvety Baileys cheesecake I had been saving space for. This, with a rich and warming sticky toffee pudding, sent us into the night thoroughly satisfied and certain to return
