Located in Milton Keynes’ theatre district, Taipan is an authentic Chinese restaurant specialising in dim sum and seafood dishes. The head chef has worked in some of the most prestigious kitchens in Hong Kong and Shanghai, and every element of our dining experience reflected a high level of expertise. From the warm welcome we received, to the impeccable service throughout the evening and, of course, the outstanding cuisine, Taipan impressed at every turn.

Dim sum is akin to tapas-style dining, consisting of numerous small plates. After choosing some interesting-sounding dishes from the extensive selection available, we eagerly anticipated the meal to come. First, we sampled a prawn roll in a gloriously crisp coating, with tender and juicy prawns and a subtle garlic flavour that paired wonderfully with the chilli sauce. Arriving soon after was beef cheung feng: masterfully seasoned minced beef wrapped in rice pastry, which was utterly delicious. Next came pan-fried fresh chive cakes, comprising cooked spinach and chives wrapped in light pastry – a startlingly good combination that I’d highly recommend. Just as we were finishing, our stuffed bean-curd rolls in oyster sauce arrived in a traditional bamboo steam stack. These flavoursome parcels were bursting with juices and a mouth-watering richness.

Following the excellent dim sum, we sampled Taipan’s main-course offering. There’s something to suit every preference, with seafood dishes like baked lobster with ginger and spring onion available alongside vegetarian offerings such as sizzling aubergine, tofu and green pepper in rich black bean sauce. I opted for the thoroughly enjoyable beef in Szechuan soup, which offered a delightful blend of spices. Many diners would be familiar with the Singapore noodles my wife chose, but Taipan’s authentic variation featuring super-fine noodles and beautiful umami flavours was superior to any other version of this dish we’ve tried. Set menus are also available and represent great value for money, so you can try a range of dishes that showcase the kitchen brigade’s talent.

A hidden gem in Milton Keynes, Taipan provides an authentic Chinese dining experience that cannot be matched without a trip Shanghai itself. Book a visit and find out for yourself why diners rave about this superb restaurant.
