Quite how it got its name so far from Sherwood Forest is a mystery, but there's no doubt that The Robin Hood has been happily serving the village folk of Clifton Reynes for more than 400 years.

It being a summer's day, I chose to dine outside on the lovely bright patio, where I sat down to study the menu. For starters I chose a selection of tapas, including duck spring rolls, lamb samosas and marinated olives and feta, with some plum sauce and mango chutney for dipping. But with steamed mussels in a creamy lime and ginger sauce served in a large bowl and potage of the day - creamed courgette - also on offer, the choice was not an easy one. The main-course menu continues with an excellent selection of hearty traditional English cooking, including rib-eye steak, home-baked ham with a honey and mustard glaze, and lamb chump grilled with rosemary and garlic. I chose to go with the day's specials menu however, from which I chose the lemon sole served with a parsley sauce and vegetables - and I certainly didn't regret the choice.

Desserts are chalked up on the blackboard daily, and out of several tantalising options I chose the chocolate pudding, which I promptly devoured - every spoonful a pleasure. All that remained to do was to sit back and enjoy a pint of ale in the green and sunny beer garden. Perfect.
