'Homely' doesn't quite do Ye Olde Bridge Inn justice. With a roaring fire, plump scatter cushions and beaming, relaxed staff, the whole establishment feels as if wrapped in warmth and bonhomie. With one eye firmly placed on high quality and the other on good value, the result is an excellent family-run pub and restaurant with mouth-watering, affordable meals and a tempting array of local ales on tap.

A recent menu revamp has seen stone-baked pizzas added to the catalogue of available fare. Wickedly crispy and exquisitely seasoned with rock salt and rosemary, they feature fresh, varied ingredients and taste unmistakably, irresistibly Italian. The classic English grub is very good too - the steak and ale pie was packed with rich, tender chunks of carefully selected, locally sourced meat, while the homemade chips had just the right amount of fluff and crunch. Nottinghamshire sausages, made with the county's best pork and venison and blended with Bramley apple and herbs, arrived with creamy mash and were absolutely bursting with flavour. I was blown away by the impossibly scrumptious caramel and honeycomb ice cream, which later made an appearance beside my companion's Grand Marnier cheesecake, which was dark and zesty yet deliciously creamy. Visit between noon and 3pm or 6pm and 9pm from Monday to Friday and enjoy a two-for-one offer. Ye Olde Bridge has got it all - there's a separate function room, Sunday carvery from noon with four local meats, fresh veg and all the trimmings, as well as a superb two-for- £10 lunch deal to boot.
