As you approach Jai Ho you might be surprised to see an imposing 19th-Century building, with the facade of a traditional pub. Originally The Coppingham Arms, Jai Ho now plays host to an Alice-through-the-key-hole effect, as its traditional exterior melts into a chic, contemporary space that owners Suresh Mehra and Sam Ahluwalia have since created.

Make your way to the bar for a pre-dinner drink and a peruse the menu. The kitchen team at Jai Ho have been formally trained in some of the finest restaurants in Mumbai and London and offer the very best in home-cooked Indian cuisine. With a list of starters spanning almost two pages of the menu we were spoilt for choice and so opted for a mixed platter, which included succulent chilli chicken, spicy lamb chops, and the special 'Chicken 65' - why 65? You'll have to ask Sam. We were also treated to a side order of fragrant aloo gobi - crisp cauliflower florets lightly fried in garlic and spices. The flavours were perfectly balanced, with the fiery chilli tempered by cooling raita. Even the salad had been given the Jai Ho treatment - beautifully coiled springs of thinly sliced carrot and beetroot decorated the plate, which we soon cleared.

Next up was a traditionally cooked dhum pukht biryani, served in an earthenware pot. The dish had been part steam-cooked and then sealed with a flat bread lid, a technique that left the chicken perfectly tender and the rice fluffy. My fellow diner chose the thali for his main course, a platter that carries a selection of curries and accompaniments served in small bowls. This authentic Indian street food didn't disappoint - from the spicy chicken curry and aromatic dhal, to the deliciously syrupy gulab jamun, delicately perfumed with rosewater, each dish was packed with flavour. Jai Ho also offers a takeaway menu, and lighter bites are served Monday to Friday, combining old favourites with original fusion flavours.

And, for a real Indian summer, head onto the terrace, where chefs Samwal and Natra Singh prepare traditional Indian barbecues. One thing's for sure, you'll be singing Jai Ho's praises all the way home.
